Everything your school needs to know about Sporting Schools and the First Trys program.
First Trys Program
First Trys is Touch Football Australia’s introductory school program, designed to help students build confidence, develop fundamental skills and experience the fun of Touch Football. Since launching in 2020, the program has created meaningful opportunities for students to get active, get involved and connect with the game. First Trys can be delivered during class time, before or after school, by TFA-appointed coaches or by teachers using the Touch Footy App.
What is First Trys?
First Trys introduces students to Touch Football in a fun, inclusive and engaging way. The program supports schools, teachers and local coaches to build students’ confidence, develop fundamental skills and progress towards modified match play. Through our national Sporting Schools network, with dedicated staff in every state and territory, we support schools from initial enquiry and booking through to delivery and feedback. Together with the Australian Sports Commission, we are committed to creating positive sporting experiences and helping more young people connect with local Touch Football opportunities.
What is included in a coach-delivered program?
Our local coaches deliver the program directly with your students, bringing the game to life through engaging drills, skill-based activities and modified games. By the end of a 4–8 week program, our aim is for students to feel confident taking the next step, whether that is joining a local junior competition or continuing to build their skills at school.
Sessions are designed for class sizes of 10–30 students, with 4–8 sessions of 45 minutes recommended. If that does not suit your timetable, our coaches can work with your school to tailor delivery. We recommend schools have access to at least 10 Mighty Touch Footballs and 12 cones. Please speak with your state office when confirming your booking.
What is a teacher-delivered program?
Our teacher-delivered program gives teachers easy access to resources through the Touch Footy App. With structured lesson plans, video demonstrations and guided support, teachers can confidently deliver Touch Football skill development and game-based activities in a way that works for their school.
We recommend purchasing an equipment pack to support the delivery of these sessions. At a minimum, schools should have 10 Mighty Touch Footballs and 12 cones available to complete the lesson plans.
Equipment add-ons
Equipment grants of up to $1,650 inc. GST are available through Australian Sports Commission funding. In partnership with Steeden, Touch Football Australia can help your school access the equipment needed to deliver a fun, engaging and successful program. From pre-built equipment packs to individual item top-ups, we can work with your budget to find the right fit for your students. We recommend placing orders 2–3 weeks before your sessions begin to allow time for processing and delivery.
What is included in an equipment pack?
Each equipment pack includes:
What additional equipment can I order?
We can source a wide range of Steeden sporting equipment. Regular options include:
If you are looking for something else, get in touch with our team, and we will see what we can arrange. Through our partnership with HART Sport, we can also access a wider range of products to support your school’s needs.
Additional program options
Every school is different, and we know one size does not always fit all. Whether you need additional coaches for multiple classes, support in a regional location or extra sessions, we can work with your school to create the best possible experience for your students. Speak with your state office to discuss the right option for your program.
What class sizes are recommended?
We recommend one coach for a maximum of 30 students. Our state offices can help arrange an additional coach or adjust delivery so your school still receives a high-quality program.
What session length works best?
We recommend sessions of 45 minutes, however we understand class times vary across the country. Our program is flexible and can be adapted to run for 35–55 minutes to align with your timetable. Our coaches and staff are experienced in helping schools make the most of their funding and delivery time.
How do I book as a school?
Schools can apply for funding and book sessions through the Australian Sports Commission website. For the latest information, visit the ASC website and begin your application process.
We loved our First Trys sessions - what’s next?
Our goal is to help more young people continue their Touch Football journey beyond the school gate. Touch Football is a game for everyone, with opportunities to play socially, compete locally and, for some, progress through regional, state and national pathways. Whether students are trying the game for the first time or are ready for their next challenge, there is a place for them in Touch Football.
Teacher Ambassador Program
The Teacher Ambassador Program gives teachers access to current programs, valuable networking opportunities, unique experiences and a national Touch Football network designed to strengthen their connection to the sport and support ongoing involvement.
For more information, visit the Teacher Ambassador page or register here.
Endorsed Schools Program (secondary schools only)
Endorsed Schools are proactive secondary schools committed to developing the next generation of Touch Football coaches and referees. With access to courses, events and programs across the country, nationally endorsed schools are well placed to strengthen their school sport offering and create meaningful pathways for students to stay involved in the game.
To apply to become an endorsed school, or to find out more, contact Temieka McAlpine or visit the Endorsed Schools Program page.
