Byron Evans has spent 30 years contributing to Touch Football as a player, referee, and volunteer. While the spotlight often lands on game day, Byron plays the most critical role behind the scenes for the ADF Warriors: making sure they actually get there. Without his planning and coordination, the team wouldn't make it to competitions across Australia.
Growing up, Byron’s winters were spent on the Rugby League field before making the natural leap to summer Touch Football, a move made even smoother as his father was also a referee.
Although injuries eventually sidelined Byron from playing and refereeing, his passion for the sport never wavered. Instead, he shifted his focus off the field, becoming an indispensable force behind the scenes, managing logistics and administration for the ADF Warriors Touch Football program.
Unifying Touch Players From Across the Nation
Coordinating sports teams is no easy task, but managing ADF Warriors comes with its own unique challenges. With personnel stationed right across the country, Byron leads planning efforts that begin nearly a year in advance.
“Defence is spread across Australia, so we have to factor in transport, meals, accommodation, medical, training camps, and command approvals to release players. We have attendees coming from Perth, Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, and the occasional Victorian player as well,” Byron explained.
For Byron, staying involved as a volunteer provides a meaningful connection to the sport after stepping back from playing.
“When all of the players take the field, I’m able to enjoy some amazing Touch Footy without the concern of injury,” he says.
“Volunteering is an incredible way to get into or remain involved in something that you enjoy. Not everyone can play for various reasons, but volunteering lets you enjoy the camaraderie and enjoyment that comes with team sports.”

Honouring Tradition at the Asia Pacific Opens Touch Cup
Among his many contributions, Byron was instrumental in planning and executing the ANZAC Day commemorations at the Asia Pacific Opens Touch Cup (APOTC) earlier this year in Mudgee, a landmark moment that highlighted the deep bond between the sport and the Defence community.
“During my career, I have been lucky enough to participate in some amazing events and the ANZAC Day ceremony at APOTC rates among the highest.
The Mudgee community was so open and appreciative of not only our attendance, but all of the competitors as well. There is a long history of service from the town, and the people were so friendly and warm in all of our interactions,” Byron said.
On a day filled with deep reflection, Byron personally participated in four separate services from dawn until dusk, including the livestreamed ceremony at the APOTC.
“Being part of the ceremony and getting to watch elite competition was a highlight. The skills on display were incredible, a fantastic experience that you just don't get viewing the games on a screen.”
