The stage is set for an exciting State League Grand Final this Friday night, with all three divisions confirmed after a dramatic evening of semi final action that delivered close contests, standout performances, and late twists across the board.
Central Scorpions surge into Men’s Grand Final after remarkable fightback
The Central Scorpions have booked their place in the Men’s Grand Final after producing a stunning second half comeback to defeat the Eastern Stingrays 8 to 7. After trailing by three tries at the break, the Scorpions lifted their intensity and composure, steadily reeling in the deficit before taking the lead with eight minutes remaining.
A late Stingrays try briefly levelled the scores, however captain Toby Gabrisch responded almost immediately, splitting the defence to restore the advantage. The match ended in dramatic fashion when the Stingrays’ Stephen Daenke dived for the line on the final play, only for officials to rule the touch was made before the ball reached the score line.
The Scorpions momentarily believed the match had ended in a draw, seeking clarification from the referee before celebrations began. The comeback marked a strong turnaround after a first half where the Stingrays handled the wet, greasy conditions more effectively and controlled much of the play. With last year’s semi final result overturned, the Scorpions now advance to face the Northern Vipers, who are chasing back-to-back titles.
Wolves advance to Women’s Grand Final after hard fought win
The South West Wolves will meet the Easten Stingrays in the Women’s Grand Final after defeating the Central Scorpions 4 to 2 in wet and heavy conditions. Persistent rain throughout the day created a challenging surface, although both teams adapted well and generated solid attacking opportunities.
The Wolves opened the scoring and held a narrow advantage for much of the half, before a Scorpions line break levelled the match. South West Wolves responded immediately and carried the lead into the break. Another equaliser early in the second half created a tense period of end to end defence, but the Wolves’ experience proved decisive as they finished strongly with two late tries to secure their place in next week’s decider.
Wolves Mixed side to take on Vipers in championship clash
In the Mixed division, the Wolves continued their strong campaign with a 6 to 4 win over the Stingrays. The Stingrays remained competitive throughout, with several first year players standing out and signalling a promising future for the squad. However, the experience and composure of veteran playmaker Darren Williams helped guide the Wolves home, setting up a grand final meeting with the Vipers as they look to replicate their 2023 championship success.
Grand Final Night awaits
With all three divisions locked in, anticipation is building for a thrilling night of grand final action this Friday. The Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed deciders promise high quality touch football, strong rivalries, and an exciting finish to the 2025 State League season.
