In its fourth year on the Touch Football calendar, the annual Cold Climate Classic (CCC) wrapped up on the weekend in Launceston in an exciting, new format supported by scenic off-field experiences in Northern Tasmania.
Historically held in Devonport, the CCC welcomed a host of teams in a change of scenery at Churchill Park, Launceston in a combination of Touch Football formats. The scenic location presented the Tasmanian Club Championships in a traditional Mixed Opens competition and introduced a half-day Fast 4s tournament for participants to enjoy.
The new format offered a unique, short social event that proved extremely popular with participants with its modified pace and rules. The four-on-four game with shortened halves showcased a thrilling competition, challenging the participant’s agility and promoting end-to-end Touch Football in a carnival-like atmosphere.
The Magpies were crowned champions in both formats, with The GOATS and Grass Stains claiming runner-up honours respectively in the Club Championships and Fast 4s. The social aspect of the event was evident in the attendance of South Queensland Defence, who travelled interstate to Launceston with a short preparation, with three teams competing throughout the weekend.
Off the field, participants were able to experience Launceston’s built heritage – connecting with the City of Gastronomy’s internationally acclaimed produce, scenery, and culture to make the most of the weekend and have a trip to remember. From a wine tour in the revered Tamar Valley to a Barnbougle golf experience, there was something for everyone in Launceston both on and off the Touch Football field.
Visit Northern Tasmania (VNT) was excited to see the realisation of the Cold Climate Classic as an attractive and wonderful opportunity for a different format of Touch Football to be exposed to Northern Tasmania, and for the players to enjoy an exciting atmosphere in Launceston.
“VNT is proud to have attracted and hosted such an exciting event in Launceston. The success and fun had by the players was a testament to the sport, the place, and the Fast 4s format. We hope to see Touch Football return to Launceston bigger and better in the near future,” Visit Northern Tasmania CEO, Tracey Mallett, said.
The Cold Climate Classic is proudly supported by Events Tasmania, Launceston City Council, and Launceston Touch Association.
