The 2024 DoorDash National Youth Championships (NYC) wrapped up on Friday evening – with tournament play revised and concluding a day earlier due to the inclement weather.

The premier youth event’s return to Coffs Harbour coincided with NSW teams reclaiming both the 18s Boys and 18s Girls championships, spoiling Queensland Representative School Sport’s (QRSS) quest for a three-peat in both divisions.

NSW Combined Independent Schools (NSWCIS) won their first-ever NYC title, outlasting QRSS 5 tries to 4 in a thrilling encounter in the 18s Boys courtesy of an early double to Jayden Douglas. In the 18s Girls, NSW Combined High Schools (NSWCHS) were taken to extra-time by QRSS in a tight contest before a final try to Anika McCarthy gave them a 4 tries to 3 victory.

Both the 16s Boys and 16s Girls divisions saw a match-up between the South Queensland Sharks and the North Queensland Cyclones – with the Sharks victorious in both grand finals to go back-to-back with their 2023 titles.

In the 14s Boys, the Hunter Western Hornets proved too strong for the South Queensland Sharks A with a 6 tries to 3 win, but the Sharks claimed another championship over the Sydney Scorpions with a close-fought 3 tries to 2 final in the 14s Girls.

A hat-trick to Braydin Karauria-Henry helped the Southern Rebels to a strong 9 tries to 2 win over 2023 champions the Sydney Scorpions in the 12s Boys division. While in the 12s Girls division, South Queensland Sharks A triumphed over the Hunter Western Hornets in a 6 tries to nil shutout.

The Sharks also claimed the tournament's top-try scorer honours, with Lacey McLaren of the Sharks' 16s Girls side walking away with twenty-one tries. Qwayde Whakatihi of the Sharks' 16s Boys side was right behind with nineteen, while Karauria-Henry's hat-trick heroics placed him third with seventeen.

Shobna Moore was awarded Referees' Referee for this year's NYC, with Will Schatz and Louise Fernance awarded Open Male and Female Referee of the Tournament respectively.
