Three from Three: Emus Crowned World Champions
The Athelite Australian Emus have taken home their first Gold Medals of the World Cup on Day Six, with other divisions aiming to follow suit as we advance to the final day of competition.
The green and gold emerged victorious in the Men’s 55s, Men’s 50s, and Men’s 45s in Grand Final matches against New Zealand to clinch Gold Medals for Australia on Saturday. New Zealand scored first in the Men’s 55s in a close game, until a late surge by the Emus in the second half secured their victory 6-4. Edward Fong was named player of the match, and John Samin claimed his 100th international cap – the first Australian to reach this mark as only a player.
The Emus started strong in the Men’s 50s final after clawing a 4-0 lead at halftime before a final scoreline of 8-2 against our Trans-Tasman rivals – with Alan Woods named player of the match. In the Men’s 45s, some great attacking Touch was on display with a final scoreline of 13-7 to Australia, as Drew Davies claimed player of the match honours.
The remainder of the divisions are proceeding to the final day of the World Cup with further Gold Medals in reach.
Following the Round-Robin stages, Australia went unbeaten to claim the top spot in all division pools. The final pool standings are listed below.
