WC Day 1

The Athelite Australian Emus’ World Cup campaign tapped off in Nottingham, England on Monday with victories in our opening four divisions on Day One of competition.

The Men’s 50s started the day off strong with recent Hall of Fame inductee Gavin Shuker scoring a hat-trick against South Africa in a 12-3 victory to bring his Australian try-scoring tally to 120. Rugby League legend Steve ‘Beaver’ Menzies also etched his name on the scoresheet – scoring on his international Touch Football debut.

The tries kept coming in the Women’s 27s, with hat-tricks to Dymphna Smith and Rebecca Beath in a strong first-up showing against the United States. The Men’s 30s kept up our momentum over the USA thanks to a strong performance from Dave Zanette, despite rain starting to drizzle. Day One closed with a Senior Mixed victory over Wales 14-2, with Nicholas Bale also starring with a hat-trick.
