Ref Hero

All kids aspire to be like their heroes when they grow up. Whether it’s the charming fictional characters from their favourite books, renowned athletes, or celebrated actors on the big screen. But for Charlayne, the dream is a little different than others – she aspires to become a referee.

A Queensland native with roots from Caboolture Touch Football Association, twelve-year old Charlayne Harrison is an aspiring level 1 referee who received an experience of a lifetime at the 2023 DoorDash National Youth Championships (NYC) held in late September at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Her passion as a referee is evident – especially to her schoolmates – as she donned the Touch Football Australia (TFA) referee uniform for Book Week. It wasn’t just her outfit that stood out, but her energy and desire to one day don the whistle and officiate at a future NYC.

National Referees Program Manager, Luke Saldern, invited Charlayne and her mother, Charmaine Harrison, to the finals of the 2023 NYC to provide Charlayne a special experience and insight into what it’s like to referee at a national level.

“Charlayne had the experience of a lifetime,” Harrison said.

“She got to meet some of the top refs in Australia and experience what it’s like to be amongst it!”

A merchandise gift bag and match day activities including the coin toss, match comms, and even running water for the 18s Boys quarter-final, set up a day to remember for Charlayne who also had the opportunity to meet female referees Zoe Genrich and Amanda Sheeky.

“Charlayne loved every moment and can’t wait until she’s fourteen and can referee at the NYC,” Harrison said.

“Special thanks to Zoe – Charlayne hasn’t stopped talking about you! I think you’ve got a fan!”

When the spotlight often shines on players – Charlayne’s ambition shows that the individuals on the sideline are just as important in our game. Referees, just like players, are an essential part of sports and show that there are multiple ways to be involved in Touch Football.

And in just a few years, Charlayne could be calling the shots on the biggest stage where she strives to be – in the middle of the field.
