Four action-packed days of the 2023 DoorDash National Youth Championships (NYC) culminated on Saturday with Queensland teams winning seven of eight divisions on offer. The largest NYC to date with 121 teams participating, saw a myriad of young talent from around the country showcased at Sunshine Coast Stadium on their quest to be crowned champions.
Queensland Secondary Schools Touch (QSST) were crowned victors in both the 18s Boys and 18s Girls divisions – achieving back-to-back championships on the Sunshine Coast. In the 18s Girls division and led by a best-on-ground performance from Kate Ellem, QSST defeated NSW Combined High Schools (NSWCHS) in a dominant performance. Whilst in the 18 Boys, Blaise Prendergast continued his breakout year helping his team over the line and surviving an almighty scare against NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (NSWCCC) in what was one of the games of the tournament, holding on for a tight 7-6 win with NSWCCC failing to equalise and send the match into Bristol Paint Extra-Time with their final play.
In the 16s divisions the South Queensland Sharks claimed the double, easily accounting for the Sydney Scorpions 11-4 in the boys final. It was a similar story in the 16s girls with the Sharks smelling blood in the water, shutting out the Brisbane Cobras 6-0.
The Cobras got one back over the Sharks in the 14 boy’s final, claiming victory 9-5. The Sharks dominance continued in the 14s girls final though, victors 8-3 over the Scorpions.
The action in the 12s divisions defied their ages with two entertaining finals played. In the boys the Scorpions narrowly held off the Hunter Western Hornets 7-5. The Hornets unfortunately went down in the 12 girls final as well, outplayed by a polished Sharks unit 6-3.
The South Queensland Sharks claimed the overall champion entity at the event after being represented in five finals – claiming victory in four.
Hayden Madders of the Brisbane Cobras 14s Boys side ended the week with thirty tries to his name to top the Bristol Paint top try-scorer list at the conclusion of the tournament, narrowly edging out fellow 14s boys player, Caleb Lewis from the Hornets on twenty-nine.
The largest contingent of referees to attend an NYC did not disappoint, with Brandon Sanderson and Zoe Genrich receiving the male and female referee of the tournament awards.
