Much is made of the 138 teams that took to the field in Coffs Harbour last week. Seventeen of whom were subsequently crowned National Champions. However, there was one team of individuals that was larger than all and participated in every game across the four-day event: our referee team.

163 referees and 12 referee coaches descended on Coffs Harbour to officiate the Inferno National Touch League last week.

Like players, the tournament provides referees an opportunity to achieve their personal goals whether that be an upgrade, finals appointment or the chance to officiate at higher standards.

In a rare sight, the Women’s Open Grand Final was a family affair, officiated by siblings Zoe and Zac Genrich. The appointment capped off an amazing tournament for Zoe who also claimed the Leading Female Referee Award for the first time.

Officiating runs deep in the Genrich family with Zoe and Zac introduced to the discipline by their father Micheal, who also refereed at the event.

Kim Skelly was awarded the Rick Borg Medal for a second consecutive year running; adjudged the overall leading referee of the tournament in another strong performance.

While Touch football Australia (TFA) Referee Director, Ian ‘Matto’ Matthew became the first person to receive a 35-year service award. Matto has provided an incredible contribution that pre-dates the lifespan of many referees at the tournament!

TFA congratulates all referees and referees’ coaches for their hard work, achievements and dedication to the event.
