Switch is an introductory program for Touch Football. Sally is a Switch coach at Ballarat and took some time to answer some questions.

Why did you start coaching Switch?

Women and non-binary players have so much to offer this sport!  I really, really enjoy seeing new players come to touch and develop their skills, but too often I've seen newbies relegated to the wings and then not return the next season.  Switch is fantastic for developing fitness, along with skills and game knowledge, so that new players can step out onto the field with confidence and enjoy it a whole lot more, right from the start.

Why did you start playing touch football?

I first became involved in the sport via an enthusiastic PE teacher back at school (a LONG way back!)  I played a little whilst at uni, but then dropped out of the sport when I moved away for work and there was no touch competition around.  Moving back to Ballarat, I came back to playing after having my kids and played with my husband's team for a few seasons.  Last season our eldest joined our team and this year our two eldest will play in our Mixed team.

I love that touch is a game for all skills levels and that those who have played for a while can teach those who are new.  But first and foremost, I love the social aspect of the game.  We're out there to have fun!

What advice would you give those who are wanting to try touch football?

There are awesome teams here who will include you and teach you the ropes, so let us know you want to play and we'll get you going!  If you want to keep it less serious, start off in the lower grades and then you can move up as you gain more confidence.  Don't be afraid to ask questions if you're unsure of a rule and don't be afraid of making mistakes - we all started as beginners.

What do you do in your spare time?

I paint and draw, and love hiking.  Catching up with friends over coffee when our schedules align is also a big one!

Switch programs are happening all over Victoria. Don’t miss out and check out a location near you.
