This year will be the 26th occasion that the Sale Knockout has been held.

In 1996 Michael Sparks, President of VTA (Victorian Touch Association), welcomed players, officials and spectators to the inaugural State Team Championships in Sale (later renamed the Sale Touch Knockout). The three years prior to this the Championships were held in Shepparton.

In the inaugural games there were sixteen men’s teams including Mighty Ducks who defeated Seals 2 to 1 in the grand final. There were seven teams in the women’s division with Lamb Chops defeating Try Time 4 tries 2. There were four men’s divisions; the women had two.

On the Sunday the Mixed competition attracted fifteen teams in three pools of 5.

Sale entered a team in Men’s Pool C, Women’s Pool B and Mixed Pool B. and at this stage the Sale men’s team thought that they could compete with the state’s best. As the day progressed the team then realized that they were in the correct pool.

The 1996 and 1997 Championships were held at St Pats oval; 1998 and 1999 the event was held at the Gippsland Grammar fields in Sale. Since then, the Knockout has been held at Stephenson Park (the homes of Sale Touch) with two fields on the main oval and five on the back field with a reserve field on the baseball diamond area.

Sale is on the Princes Highway approximately 220 k east of Melbourne. The town has modern sporting facilities including synthetic hockey field, aquatic centre, velodrome together with many sporting ovals.

The captain of the Collingwood Football Club, Scott Pendlebury played his junior and senior football in Sale

The Wellington Shire, the 3rd largest in Victoria, is supportive of all sporting events that showcase the area and Touch is no exception. In years gone by the Shire held a Civic Reception for visiting dignitaries and team officials.

Unfortunately, this year the old changerooms have been demolished and replaced with two single story buildings which will not be ready for the Knockout.

The Shire has made alternative arrangements for toilets and changerooms. St John Ambulance and a Masseur will be on site both days. Full canteen services will also  be provided.

The Sale committee, teams and players look forward to seeing you in town for this annual event.
