Despite a few event postponements and cancellations due to COVID-19 disruptions, the 2021 calendar is still full of Touch Football – as long as coronavirus doesn’t interfere again! Check out the events currently scheduled to run around the country…*
The month’s almost wrapped up. So far we’ve seen cross-border tournament Your Pod Cup (16th) played between South Australian and Victorian participants. No rest for those two states, with the inaugural Junior Alliance Cup (23rd-25th) being held to provide an opportunity for juniors who weren’t able to compete at their regular youth events during 2020 – teams from the NT, VIC, TAS and SA took part in Adelaide. The Indomie Noodles Victorian Super Series also tapped off this month (on the 10th) and runs into February.
As this Touch-packed month quickly approaches, we’ll see the 6th installment of the Bundaberg Cup (6th-7th), one of Australia’s richest Touch knockouts, take over the Bundaberg, QLD. The TAS Junior State Cup (13th-14th) will be held. NSW juniors are now doing their final training sessions before the NSW Junior State Cup (JSC) – first, the Northern Conference in Port Macquarie (19th-21st), followed by the Southern Conference in Wagga Wagga (26th-28th). Plus some more social events – SA’s Beach Touch (13th **POSTPONED**) run by Adelaide Uni, and VIC’s Battle of the Best (14th) in Geelong.
Coffs Harbour is ready to host the Inferno National Touch League (NTL) (10th-13th). We’ll also see Northern and Southern Conference champs battle it out at the NSW JSC State Final (6th). After a big lack of footy in 2020, Victoria are looking forward to both their VIC Junior State Cup (21st) and Indomie Noodles TFV State Cup (27th-28th). And WA State Championships will now run 26th-28th.
As many of the winter social comps tap off around now, both WA and the NT will hold events to honour the ANZACs, with the WA ANZAC Challenge a day before the public holiday (24th) and the NT ANZAC Cup the day after (26th). The Territory will also kick off their NT Titles late this month (29th).
Winter social comps in the south are generally underway by now, and in rep land, Orange will play host to the NSW Junior Regionals (1st May). Up in the north the annual Battle of the Islands tournament is booked in for (20th-23rd). Speaking of north, the NT is celebrating 40 years of Touch this year, so it’ll be a particularly exciting NT Ochre Awards (1st) to wrap up the NT Titles. Victoria’s Junior VT League will also commence this month.
The Blues and Maroons rivalry will finally play out in Coffs Harbour for the State of Origin (18th-19th) that was meant to take place last year. Do you #bleedblue or are you a #Qlder? Over in WA, the North-West Touch Carnival (5th-6th) in Tom Price will play out.
This month Hervey Bay plays host to the QLD Junior State Cup (8th-10th). Touch Football ACT plans to once again host the NAIDOC Day Touch event (12th), in line with the 2021 NAIDOC Day theme of Heal Country. This month the NT will also host their annual East Arnhem/Dave Langridge Cup (23rd).
Junior summer comps will begin around about now in the south of the country, and registrations for summer comps will start opening up. Time to start getting a team together! In rep land, NSW entities will start competing in the Vawdon Cup this month across different Sydney locations. And South Australia will play host to the Catholic School Games (31st Aug-3rd Sept).
While dates haven’t been announced yet, the annual National Youth Championships (NYC) tends to be held around now. Gear up for the best of the youth entities to battle it out. Stay tuned for date and venue announcements.
Events season is coming back with a vengeance! October will see a lot of action in the west, with the School Sports WA Teachers Games (5th-7th), the Australian Masters Games held in Perth (9th-16th) and the first round of the WA Super League. In the east, we’ll see the Gold Coast Titans All Schools (6th-10th) on the Gold Coast, the NSW Country Championships (16th-17th), the commencement of the ACT Super League and the resumption of the ACT Lifeline Touch Day (22nd) to raise funds for Lifeline. Victoria’s VT League will also commence this month.
The year might be starting to wrap up but the Touch events aren’t. The School Sports Australia Touch Championships (1st-5th) will this year be held in Wagga Wagga, NSW. The QLD State Cup (26th-28th) and WA Juniors State Championships (27th-28th) will also take place this month.
As Santa busily prepares his sleigh, NSW Touch will be busy putting on the NSW State Cup (3rd-5th).
…And we’ve made it through the year – hopefully fitter, more skilful, with new mates and plenty of meaningful memories from on and off the field.
