Record attendance numbers were seen at the recent North Queensland Junior Championships over the October long weekend.

The weather certainly didn’t disappoint as the wind, rain and sunshine gave the record 98 teams different conditions to play in. As regions across North Queensland converged to Queens Park Touch fields in Townsville, they brought with them a showcase of junior stars who displayed an array of talent that will give North Queensland Touch a bright promising future.

Along with the 98 teams also came 98 accredited Foundation and/or Talent coaches. North Queensland has put in a great deal of work to get all our coaching staff accredited with over 21 coaching courses presented since the beginning of the year. It’s a true indication of the region’s commitment to the sport and grassroots strategy. The tournament’s growth is an ongoing tribute to all of the hard work each affiliate/club and their volunteers tirelessly put in each year.

The North Queensland Junior Championships wouldn’t be as successful without its officials and with the record teams come a contingent of referees who commit to the weekend to see the junior Touch teams display some great Touch Football. This year saw all the referees accredited (minimum Level 1) with some very promising junior referees who displayed exceptional confidence and attitude to officiate a wide variety of games across different divisions. Some referees were lucky enough to referee alongside former world number one female referee Trish Dick, who along with Ken Beare, came out of retirement to help referee over the weekend.
