The North Queensland Touch Association’s 2013 Junior Regional Championships have been run and won for another year, with pleasing results for some of the region’s smaller affiliates.
Atherton, Burdekin, Bowen, Gordonvale and Tully Touch Associations all featured teams in this year’s Grand Finals, with Bowen and Gordonvale going one step further and claiming the title in the Girls Under 12 and Girls Under 10 competitions, respectively.
It’s no surprise for the NQTA’s Executive Officer Billy Grant, who says it’s due to the hard work and determination of the coaches and players in each of the areas.
“They come away every year with a goal to improve on last year’s performance and they’ve certainly done that this year.”
Townsville club sides made up half of the team nominations into this year’s competition and, for Grant, it was pleasing to see that the smaller affiliates were competitive in each of their divisions.
“While it’s great for the Townsville area to see so many local sides make it through to the finals, it’s even better for the game to know that our out-of-town sides are able to match it with them.”
Of special note this year was the Girls Under 12 division Grand Final which featured sides from two of the region’s smallest affiliates, Bowen and Tully.
“It’s great to see that the work has paid off for the teams. Both affiliates are down in team numbers this year but it’s obvious that they have some quality Touch players coming through the pathway,” Grant said.
For the first time this year, participants at the event were exposed to the higher levels of the sport as the inaugural Mad Cow Tavern NQ All Stars Super Challenge was played alongside the junior tournament.
“It was a chance for the elite players of the region to show up-and-coming players what you can achieve in the sport. It was something we worked hard to get right and it’s definitely something we’ll be doing next year.”
