Last month Touch Football Tasmania (TFT) held its first Schools Championships event in Devonport, an event State Operations Manager, Maree Tomlin declared a success that will hopefully be an annual fixture on the Tasmanian calendar.
The event was attended by Australian Women’s captain, Louise Winchester and Australian Men’s captain, Steve Roberts, who ran activities and skills sessions in between the tournament games.
Congratulations to Riverside High School who took out the inaugural competition, which included a total of 17 teams in age groups from 10-18 years old.
Tomlin however says the competition itself sometimes took a backseat to the enjoyment of the sessions with Steve and Louise.
“I don’t think the kids wanted to go back and play games they just wanted to keep doing things with Steve and Louise a lot of the time,” Tomlin said.
“[Steve and Louise] were like rock stars with kids coming from everywhere to come and meet them, they were just absolutely fantastic.”
The day also consisted of a game in which the parents and coaches challenged an All Star team made up of all the youth from the competition rotating through with Steve and Louise, with Maree describing the fixture as ‘hysterical’.
With the first year of the event running so well, there are plans to make next year’s competition bigger and better, with other schools already showing interest in joining the event for its second year.
Tomlin wishes to thank everyone who helped out at the tournament, as well as the players and parents and Roberts and Winchester, who were a big part of the event’s success.
