It’s been a busy week of Touch Football in Victoria, with plenty of exciting events happening including the Victorian Women’s Open team taking part in a half-time exhibition at the Melbourne Storm game on Monday night.

The weekend started with the Victorian 15's and 18’s Boys and Girls teams travelling to Lake Dewar Lodge to take part in a High Performance weekend in the lead up to the School Sport Australia National Tournament and the  2012 X-Blades National Youth Championships respectively. Australian Women’s Open coach, Peter Bell, Australian Mixed Open coach, Micheal Lovett, Touch Football Australia’s High Performance Manager, Wayne Grant and Victoria's first Australian Open representative, Leah Percy, were all in attendance for the weekend to share their knowledge with the players and coaches.

The camp also provided professional development opportunities for Victoria’s state coaching staff, who participated in a Coaches Forum, presented by Wayne Grant. Both Grant and the Australian coaching representatives delivered a highly informative presentation, advising our Victorian state coaches on their roles in developing athletes in the sport as well as providing direction on fundamental team strategies. They key goal was to ensure that our coaching staff would be able to identify and learn the correct techniques/skills of the game, and how to effectively deliver them to their respective teams.

Saturday also saw the Active City Melbourne Sports’ inaugural ‘Just Play’ Gala Day at Fawkner Park. 22 teams took part in the day, including 17 social teams, many of whom were introduced to Touch Football for the first time. The event was designed to promote Touch Football to the wider Melbourne community and drew in teams from a variety of backgrounds.

On Monday night, the best grassroots players from Fawkner Park took on the Victorian Women’s Open team in an exhibition game at half-time of the Melbourne Storm versus Cronulla Sharks game.

The players showcased Touch Football brilliantly in front of 13,000 fans with a 10 minute touchdown turnaround game. The crowd was extremely enthusiastic with the local Victorian Touch Football community sitting in the stands cheering and watching on the big screen.

Victoria’s first Australian Open representative, Leah Percy, gave a great interview regarding her performance at the 2012 Trans Tasman Series and how women can get involved Touch Football in Victoria and followed it up with a stellar performance on the field.

Tuesday saw the launch of the 2012 Wine Rules event, which will be held on Sunday, 18 November. For more information, please visit the Wine Rules website – www.winerules.com.au.
