Teams from across the New South Wales Hunter/Western Hornets region, including Newcastle City, Wallsend, Maitland, Singleton, Beresfield, Central Coast, Doyalson, Singleton, Scone, Muswellbrook, Peninsula, Taree, home club Nelson Bay and returning Club Champions Berkeley Vale, will battle it out in the two day tournament, across 10 Touch fields, at the Tomaree Sports Complex on Saturday, 4 and Sunday, 5 February.
With the assistance of over 500 volunteers, coaching staff, referees and event personnel, this will be the largest Hornets Junior Touch Football Championships on record.
Boys and Girls teams from under 10’s up to under 18’s will battle it out for their respective divisions, as well as gaining points for the ultimate ‘Club Championship’ trophy.
New South Wales Touch Association Hall of Fame member, Dean McManus (Wallsend) and Touch Football Australia Hall of Fame member, Gai Taylor (Beresfield), have been awarded the namesakes for the under 18’s Boys and Girls divisions respectively. Both of these players have had extraordinary careers in the game with several state and international caps, in addition to over 50 years of combined selections for the Hornets regional sides.
2011 World Cup Australian representatives Amy and Holly Smith (Senior Mixed) and Darren McSpadden (Men’s 35’s) have also been named official ambassadors of the 2012 tournament and will be there to showcase the skills of the game to those in attendance.
To top the event off, the almost 100 junior sides will also be graced with the presence of some of the world’s best Touch Football referees, including Nelson Bay’s own Sam Clark.
Clark is currently the world’s number one female Touch Football referee, and is holding the title high. With the addition of several other international Touch Football referees including Daniel Scully, Karen Davies, John Frost (Nelson Bay), Beau Newell (Wallsend), John Turnbull, Simon Jackson and Gavin King (Central Coast), this event is sure to be the most impressive yet.
Games start on Saturday at 8.00am until 6.00pm, with the final round games and finals on the Sunday from 8.00am until 4.00pm at the Tomaree Sports Complex, Nelson Bay Road, Nelson Bay.
