The 2009 New South Wales State Cup saw Hennessey’s Hornsby Lions take out the Men’s Open title, and six weeks later he was part of the Australian Men’s Open side that defeated New Zealand in Auckland in the 2010 Trans Tasman Series.
March saw Hennessey’s Sydney Scorpions side win the 2010 X-Blades National Touch League final for the first time in 10 years, while earlier this month Hennessey led the Hornsby Vawdon Cup Men’s Premier League side to the title over the Penrith Panthers, where he was named Player of the Final.
And last weekend he stepped out in the red, white and green of the Wanneroo Lions, being a key factor in their 2010 WA Be Active State Championships Men’s Open’s title.
2010 was the second year that Hennessey has played in the WA State Championships, something that he enjoyed being a part of.
“Chance Bunce and I were playing in a side last year and he moved over here for Rugby and we could have one import per team, so he just rang me up and said he was starting a new side so if I wanted to come over and help the boys I could, so I said yes.”
Hennessey was instrumental in Wanneroo’s title win at the WA State Championships, having a hand in the majority of the Lions touchdowns in their grand final win over the Southern Stars, which they won 10-8.
He was impressed with the talent he witnessed at the event this year, and says he has definitely seen an improvement since last year’s championships.
“This year it was heaps better, last year we were playing and our team wasn’t that good and we were still going pretty good against all of the sides. “
“This year everyone’s trying really hard and it’s heaps better and they are learning from going to National Touch League’s or I’m not sure if they are getting videos, but they are learning,” he said.
As well as playing in the tournament, Hennessey was also able to help the players in his team, sharing some of his experience and knowledge.
“I’ve called a few of them aside and told them a few things, I think they’ve taken it in and hopefully they are getting something out of me being here.”
Hennessey got the chance to meet the team from Ramingining, East Arnhem Land, on Sunday, something that both parties got a real benefit from.
“It was unreal, a few of them they struggle with their English but they were telling me how they got over here and they’ve only been playing for three months. It’s unreal, they are the nicest blokes,” Hennessey said.
