The Australian Mixed Opens team have won their three match Trans-Tasman series with a 7-4 victory at a waterlogged Rotorua International Stadium.
The Aussies opened the scoring through Catherine Stevens when Dylan Thompson’s speed got him to the outside of his defender and found a diving Stevens to score in the corner.
The Kiwis quickly levelled it up when Simon Lang was ruled offside and play was allowed to continue for the hosts to square it up through Nat Turner. The Aussies hit back with Thompson’s speed again getting him on the outside of his defender this time for Leah Percy to cross the stripe.
With the raining coming down in buckets the Aussies found some space through the middle for a 3-1 lead with Langbridge finding Hoch to give the Aussies their largest lead of the match and the series.
The Kiwis scored back to back tries to tie it up heading into the break but it was the visitors who would find the better of the going in the second half to ensure they retained their Trans-Tasman title.
It was again the Australian’s speed that proved too hard to handle this time it was Cridland getting on the outside of the left link to score his first of the day. Both Thompson and Cridland were back at it moments later when they teamed up this time through the middle with the later scoring his second in a row.
Thompson was terrific for the Australian’s in the decider and got one of his own as the game wore down and when Zara Nicholas crossed to give the Australians a three try lead the series was firmly in the Aussies hands as they closed it out with a 7-4 victory.
