The Yass Knockout was in full flight this year with 90 teams in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed ready to play for the 2019 title. Tents lined the fields, eskies at the ready and sunscreen in high demand.
This tournament is renowned for bringing in the big names and this year was no different. Teams travelled from all over including but not limited to the Cook Islands, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland, the ACT, while NSW was, of course, well represented. A few of the names we enjoyed competing in the inaugural NRL Touch Premiership – Rebecca Beath (Eels); Graeme Clancy (Titans); David Maher (Titans); Aaliyah Paki (Eels); Jess Potts (Knights); Faith Nathan (Eels), to name just a few, as well as ex-NRL star Scott Prince – played alongside their mates in this fun social tournament.
While all the teams started warming up for their first game, so did Mother Nature. The day started out in the high 20 degrees, and the format was changed this to 10-minute halves instead of touchdown-turnaround. By the time round 2 of the Mixed games arrived, the captains had been called in to inform everyone that remainder of the games had been cancelled to comply with the TFA Extreme Weather Guidelines. While that dampened some teams’ spirits, others rallied friends/teams/referees and created their own friendly games. Others gave the touch away for the day and brought out the cricket game earlier than usual.
As it was expected to be a hot one again on Sunday the decision was made to keep the games at 2x 10minute halves and play out the remainder of round two games, one less round that normal. The Men’s and Mixed were split into three divisions, and the Women’s into two.
Finals day heated up and so did the competition. As the day progressed into the grand finals, the crowd was treated to some spectacular games, with at least two divisions going into drop-off.
A huge congratulations to the A-grade division winners: Freezin Ice Black for the Men’s; Te Whanau for the Women’s; and Galaxy for the Mixed. Congratulations, also, to the referees who travelled and kept their calm in the heat of the tournament. Games can’t go ahead without the assistance of our officials.
