In 2014, a strategic partnership was formed between the NRL and Touch Football at the national level, which has reaped many benefits for both football codes. This partnership has now filtered down to the grass roots level in Joondalup, which will no doubt be beneficial to the members of both clubs.
For the first time this Winter, the Joondalup Giants Rugby League Club will host the ECU Giants Touch Football competition at Admiral Park in Heathridge.
Until recently, the relocation to Admiral Park would not have been feasible due to inadequate lighting. However, recently installed lighting, funded partly by the City of Joondalup, will enable the two Joondalup clubs to come together quite literally.
The ECU Giants have been based at the nearby ECU Joondalup campus since Winter 2011, having previously operated at HBF Arena as the Joondalup Touch Football Association (established in 2003).
The touch football competition is an integral part of the ECU student community, however the majority of members are from the wider community. President of the ECU Giants Touch Football, Chris Ray, said “This move will bring us closer to the rugby league community, and we are extremely excited.”
During the recent Summer the touch football club rebranded itself as “ECU Giants” to reflect its the new alliance with the Joondalup Giants. This resulted in growth of junior members and representation of the club at the Junior State Championships for the first time.
The “ECU Giants” also won state titles in the Mens Open and Over 40 Mens divisions in February this year and early indications suggest the club is set to grow even further over the next 12 months.
President of Joondalup Giants Rugby League Club, Sam Norton, fully supports the move. “Between our two clubs we will work together to strengthen our partnership for the good of our members, their families and the community,” said Mr Norton.
Further planning is underway to ensure both clubs benefit including joint promotions, demo matches and social functions.
Both clubs are currently recruiting members for the upcoming season. To find out more, search “ECU Giants” or “Joondalup Giants” on Facebook.
