Today (Friday 6th October) is the final day of the 2017 Defence Nationals in Brisbane and the favourites in each division have emerged from the pack.
In the Men’s Open division, North Queensland (NQ) were the big movers on Thursday atoning their slow start to the tournament defeating Sydney Metro 10-1 and pushing division favourites South Queensland A all the way in an eventual 4-6 defeat. The win cemented South Queensland A as the team to beat in the Men’s Open Division and locked in the following Semi Final match ups:
Men’s Open Semi Finals (Friday 6th October – 9.30am)
SF1: South Queensland A v Northern Territory C
SF2: ACT/Country v North Queensland
South Queensland A will start strong favourites against the Northern Territory boys and are expected to advance to the Grand Final. Semi Final two on the other hand is a tantalizing match up that could go either way with both teams showing strong form in the round matches. Expect it to go down to the wire and a result either way will not surprise.
Earlier this morning the Plate semi finals were held with Sydney Metro and Northern Territory A advancing to the Plate Final at 10.30am.
SF1: Sydney Metro defeated South Queensland B (6-0)
SF2: Northern Territory A defeated Northern Territory B (8-3)
In the Women’s Open division, North Queensland have been dominant throughout the week dropping just the one match to South Queensland by a touchdown which earnt the ladies from the North the right to progress straight to the Grand Final.
Their opponents will be the winner of the Semi Final match up between South Queensland and Sydney Metro. If the South Queensland girls can get the job done in the semi’s they will go into the Grand Final confident as the only team to defeat North Queensland during the week. Can they repeat that effort on the big stage or will the extra break ensure the ladies from North Queensland are refreshed and ready for one last strong performance? The Women’s Open Final taps off at 2.00pm today.
South Queensland A have made the Men’s 30s division their own progressing through pool play undefeated and with an impressive for and against of 52/15. Their performance has earnt them the right to advance straight to the Grand Final where they will play their South Queensland B counterparts, after South Queensland B defeated ACT / Country 11-2 in the Semi Final earlier today.
The Grand Final (and battle for teammate bragging rights) between South Queensland A Vs South Queensland B commences at 1.00pm today.
